Sidechain compression in Ableton Live 12

Solo the kick: punchy. Solo the bass: solid. Play them together and the kick turns into a dull thud inside the bass. Nothing is wrong with either sound. They both live between 40 and 120 Hz, and when they sound at the same moment your speaker has to sum them, so the louder, longer one masks the shorter one.

There are two fixes, and they solve two different problems. Sidechain compression fixes a collision in time: the bass steps aside for the few milliseconds the kick needs, then comes back. EQ carving fixes a collision in frequency: each sound gives up a little of the range the other one owns, permanently. This post sets up the first with Live’s stock Compressor, then tells you when the second is the better answer.

What sidechain compression actually does

A compressor normally turns down the signal it sits on when that signal gets loud. Sidechain mode changes what it listens to: the compressor sits on the bass but watches the kick. Every kick hit pushes the bass down a few dB; between hits the bass returns to full level. The kick gets a clean window, and the low end starts to breathe in time with the drums, which in house and most electronic styles is a sound you want on purpose.

Step 1: put a Compressor on the bass

Drag Live’s Compressor (Audio Effects, stock in every edition) onto the bass track, after whatever shapes the bass sound.

Step 2: route the kick into its sidechain

Click the triangle in the Compressor’s title bar to unfold the sidechain section, and switch Sidechain on. In the Audio From chooser, pick your kick track.

The second chooser under it is the tap point, and it matters more than it looks:

The headphone button in the sidechain section lets you audition exactly what the compressor is listening to. Worth one click to confirm it hears the kick and only the kick.

Step 3: the four settings that matter

Verify the way you verify everything: loop the busiest section and toggle the Compressor on and off. On, the kick should punch through with the bass still feeling continuous. If the bass audibly stutters, the release is too short or the reduction too deep.

The ghost kick

The pumping pad sound in a breakdown, where everything breathes but no kick is playing, is this exact setup with one twist: the trigger kick lives on its own muted track. Put a four-on-the-floor kick clip on a spare track, mute the track, and feed the sidechains from it with the tap point on Pre FX, so the trigger fires while the track stays silent. Every pumping breakdown you have ever heard is some version of this.

When plain EQ is the answer instead

If the kick and bass clash even when the mix is quiet and sparse, the problem is frequency, not timing, and no amount of ducking fixes a range both sounds occupy continuously. Carve instead: find the kick’s fundamental (drop Live’s Spectrum on the kick track and read the peak, typically 45 to 60 Hz), then put an EQ Eight on the bass and cut 2 to 3 dB at that frequency with a Q around 1.5. The bass barely changes solo, and the kick suddenly has a home. Modern low ends are usually both: a small permanent carve plus a few dB of sidechain on top.

And sometimes sidechain is simply wrong: a melodic bassline that carries the hook will read its own ducking as a rhythm you did not write. If the dips are audible as rhythm and you do not want that rhythm, carve, or arrange the two parts so they interlock instead of colliding.

Where Dawbrain fits

Put a Compressor on the Bass track: ratio 4 to 1, attack 0.1 ms, release 100 ms.

Then point the sidechain at the kick yourself in the unfolded section: switch Sidechain on, open Audio From, pick the kick. The carving version is also one request:

Put an EQ Eight on the Bass and cut 2.5 dB at 55 Hz with a Q of 1.5.

And it can run the before and after for you:

Turn the compressor off, play the drop, then turn it on and play it again.

The same eight bars twice, without reaching for the mouse in between. Whether the kick still hits as hard is the one part of this you have to answer yourself.

What it will not decide for you

How much pump is a genre decision and a taste decision. Deep house wears 6 dB of ducking as a rhythmic feature; a bass-led track might tolerate 2 dB as invisible hygiene. Dawbrain will set the compressor you describe, but the release time that makes the groove breathe is found by looping the bar and listening, and whether the low end should breathe at all is your call. That is the difference between a mix move and a production identity, and the second one stays yours.
