Fix a muddy mix: the 200-500 Hz buildup

The mix is not wrong anywhere you can point to. Every track sounds fine on its own. But the whole thing is thick, congested, somehow small, and on a phone speaker it turns into a blur. The word everyone reaches for is muddy, and it is the most used and least defined word in mixing.

Here is the definition: mud is a buildup between roughly 200 and 500 Hz, and it is not caused by any single track. That range is where almost everything in a modern production keeps its body. The kick’s boxy weight sits around 250 to 350. The bass’s second and third harmonics land through 200 to 400. Guitar and keys have their fundamentals there. A vocal’s warmth lives from 200 to 400. Pads park whole octaves in it, and then the reverb tails of all of the above pile in behind them.

Each element is polite on its own, which is why soloing never finds mud. Eight tracks, each carrying a reasonable amount of 300 Hz, sum into a region with eight tracks’ worth of energy. Mud is a property of the sum, so you have to hunt it in the full mix.

Two reasons you stopped hearing it. Your ear adapts to a tonal balance within minutes, and “warm” and “muddy” are the same energy described in different moods. And on small speakers the sub disappears entirely, which promotes the low-mids to being the low end, so the buildup you tuned out on monitors is the loudest thing about your mix on a phone.

Step 1: hear what actually lives there

Before fixing the region, meet it. Put an EQ Eight on the master, temporarily, and use its audition mode: click the headphone icon, then click and hold on the display. You hear only a narrow band around your pointer. Drag slowly from 200 to 500 while the busiest section loops.

This is usually a small shock. You will hear parts of your kick, most of your bass, the body of the chords, the warmth of the vocal, and a wash of reverb, all living in the same three-hundred-hertz-wide apartment. Now you know what you are adjudicating between. Delete this EQ when you are done; the fix does not belong on the master.

Step 2: find the buildup with a sweep

The sweep localizes the problem to a frequency. On the track you suspect contributes most, usually pads, chords, or bass, add an EQ Eight and set one band to a bell: gain +9 dB, Q around 6. Now drag that band slowly from 150 to 600 Hz while the full mix plays, not in solo.

A warning that saves the technique: everything sounds bad boosted 9 dB with a narrow Q. You are not listening for “bad,” you are listening for the spot that is disproportionately bad, where the tone tips from boosted into honking and unbearable. That is where the buildup lives. Note the frequency, then flip the band from +9 to a cut of 2 or 3 dB and widen the Q to around 1. The cut should be modest and wide even though the search was loud and narrow.

Step 3: cut, or carve, but not everywhere

With the frequency found, there are two moves, for two situations:

Cut when one or two tracks own the buildup. A single wide 2 to 4 dB cut on the biggest contributor, or on the group that contains it, is usually the whole fix. The region only needs to lose about 3 dB in total, and it should lose them from the track that was hogging the range.

Carve when two elements genuinely need the same range. Decide who owns it and move everyone else over: the vocal keeps its 300 Hz warmth, so the pad loses 3 dB there; the bass keeps 250, so the kick’s box gets trimmed instead. Complementary cuts mean every range still has one full-bodied owner, which is what keeps the mix sounding big after it stops sounding muddy.

The classic mistake is treating the sweep’s answer as a verdict on every track and cutting 300 Hz across the whole mix. That removes the mud and the body with it, and the result is hollow, thin, and phone-shaped in a new way. Mud means the region has one or two too many occupants, not that the region is bad.

Step 4: the mud EQ cannot fix

Two contributors live outside any track’s EQ. Reverb returns accumulate low-mids from everything you send to them; a low cut around 250 to 300 Hz on the return track keeps the tail out of the body of the mix, and it is a stock move for a reason. And when two parts play the same register, a pad doubling the chords an octave down, a bass and a synth sharing the same octave, that is an arrangement collision, and the honest fix is moving or muting a part, not equalizing the evidence.

Step 5: verify without fooling yourself

A cut makes the mix quieter, and quieter reads as worse, so a naive bypass comparison will vote against your fix every time. Compensate with a small level bump (EQ Eight’s output Gain works) or match by ear before judging. Then check in mono, check on the smallest speaker you own, and check against a level-matched reference, which is its own discipline: level-matching a reference track. Clear beats warm in the morning, too. Sleep on it before you widen any cut past 4 dB.

Which element owns the low-mids is not a technical question. A warm, thick 300 Hz is the entire identity of some records, and clinical clarity would ruin them.
