How to turn a loop into a full song in Ableton Live
You have eight bars that sound good. They have sounded good for forty minutes now, because you keep playing them back instead of doing the next thing.
This is the most common place for a track to die. When EDMProd surveyed 1,097 producers about their biggest struggle, the top answer, at 19 percent, was “I don’t know where to start,” and arrangement and finishing sat right behind it. Producers call it loopitis: the loop is finished, the song has not begun, and the gap between the two is not a creative gap. It is labor.
Think about what actually stands between your eight bars and a three-minute track. Duplicate the loop out to length. Mute things to make an intro. Unmute them one at a time. Trim a clip, drag it, realise it is a bar off, drag it back. Copy the drums but not the bass. Do it again for the second half. None of that is a musical decision. It is forty minutes of mouse work standing between you and the first moment you can hear whether the arrangement is any good.

Step 1: commit to a length before you commit to anything else
Every arrangement guide worth reading starts the same way: stop auditioning the loop and stretch it out to song length first. Three minutes of the same eight bars is a boring track, but it is a track, and now you are editing something instead of staring at an empty timeline.
Doing it by hand means selecting the clip, hitting duplicate, counting bars, and doing it again on every track. In Dawbrain you say it once:
Copy the drum, bass and chord clips into the Arrangement and tile them from bar 1 to bar 96.
It reads which clips those are, places them on the timeline, and tiles each one back to back across the range you named. One request, ninety-six bars, every track. You are now looking at a song-shaped thing you can carve into.
A note that matters more than it sounds: it tiles by the region each clip actually occupies on the timeline, not by its loop length. If you trimmed a clip so it ends early, the copies still sit flush instead of drifting a beat further out with every repeat, which is the classic way a hand-built arrangement goes quietly out of time around bar 60.
Step 2: subtract, do not add
The instinct is to write new parts for the intro. The better move, and the one every arrangement tutorial converges on, is to take things away from what you already have. Your loop is your loudest section. Everything else is that loop with pieces missing.
The clumsy version of this is duplicating the drum clip and deleting notes until it sounds sparse. Dawbrain thinks about a drum pattern as four layers: the kick, the backbeat (snare and clap), the timekeeping (hats, ride, percussion), and the accents (crashes and phrase fills). You ask for the ones you want:
Write the same beat as kick and hats only for bars 1 to 16, then add the backbeat from bar 17.
That is the same groove, thinned. It is not a different genre that happens to be sparser, which is what you get when you reach for another preset, and it is not a different feel. Same pattern, fewer voices, so the moment the full kit arrives at bar 33 it actually lands.
You can pull energy without touching the notes at all:
Write the intro drums at 70 percent velocity and the chorus at 115.
Same notes, same positions, played softer or harder. That is the difference between a section that is quieter and a section that is played quieter, and your ear knows the difference even when you cannot name it.
Step 3: think in sections, not in clips
Here is where hand-arranging really costs you. A 96-bar arrangement is maybe eight sections across four tracks. Built by hand that is thirty-something separate operations, each one an opportunity to put something on the wrong track or the wrong bar.
Dawbrain builds a whole arrangement in one pass. Ask for the structure and it writes every section at once rather than working through them one at a time:

Every one of those clips is generated and placed in a single round. Where a section repeats a pattern you already have, it duplicates the existing clip instead of writing it again, which is both faster and guarantees the repeat is actually identical.
Then you can ask about what you built, which is the thing that is oddly hard to do by looking at your own timeline:
What is playing in the second half? Which tracks are empty past bar 64?
On a big session that used to be a question you avoided. It now comes back in a few seconds across the whole set.
Step 4: fills and breaks belong in the build
Sections that simply stop and start sound like sections. A fill is the bar that tells you one is ending. A break is the bar where everything stops so the return hits harder. Both are the difference between sections that merely follow each other and sections that lead into each other, and both are cheap to ask for:
16-bar drop with a snare roll on the last bar. Then everything out for bar 33, full kit back at 34.
Ask for them while the arrangement is being built rather than afterwards. There is a practical reason, and it is worth knowing up front instead of discovering: clips on Ableton’s Arrangement timeline are create-only here. Dawbrain can write a new clip at a bar, but it cannot open a clip already sitting on the timeline and edit the notes inside it. Session clips it edits freely. So a fill you name during the build is part of that section’s pattern, while a fill you decide on afterwards means a new clip written at that bar.
A break is the easier of the two, because a break is not something you add. It is a bar you do not fill. When you name the sections, name the gap.
For everything else that lives on the joins, your own library is one request away:
Find a riser in my samples and put it on an audio track at bar 29, and a reverse crash at the top of the drop.

Step 5: make it move
Eight bars repeated twelve times is not an arrangement. It is a loop with a longer runtime. What separates the two is movement: the same idea arriving slightly differently each time it comes back.
Four things move a part, and each one is a phrase in the request rather than a menu:
- Density. “Sparser hats in the verse, busier in the drop.” Same pattern, more or less going on.
- The figure. A genre carries a default drum figure, but you can name a different one and keep the rest of the style. Vary the figure within a style rather than assembling a style out of parts.
- The seed. The same instruction rolled again gives you a different pattern in the same character. If a section is nearly right, ask for another take of it rather than describing what to change.
- Groove. “Put the MPC 60 swing on the hats.” Dawbrain finds the groove in your Ableton library, loads it into the groove pool, and applies it to the clip.
Worth saying plainly: swing and the small timing and velocity variations that keep a part from sounding typed in are not knobs you set. They come with the genre you asked for. That is usually what you want, because the pocket of a house beat and the pocket of a jungle beat are not the same setting at a different value, and a genre that already knows its own feel is a better starting point than a slider you have to guess at.
Each of those is one control with one job, and there are a few more of them per part. Getting the MIDI part you want goes through all of them, and through what each of the five generators knows about the style you asked for.
Movement is also where the fast feedback loop pays off twice. Ask for the drop three ways, listen to all three, keep one. That is a few minutes, and it is not a decision you would have made at all if each version cost you a quarter of an hour of dragging.
What it will not decide for you
Dawbrain does not have a “write me a song” button, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It will not tell you the drop should be 32 bars, or that your breakdown needs a vocal, or that the track is finished. Those are the decisions that make it your track, and they stay yours.
What changes is how fast you find out whether a decision was right. Arrangement is hard partly because the feedback loop is so slow: you spend forty minutes building a structure before you can hear it, and by then you are too invested to admit it was the wrong structure. Compress that to one request and a few seconds and you will try the version you would otherwise have talked yourself out of. Try three. Keep the one that works.
The loop was never the hard part. Now the rest of it is not the hard part either.
